A Tooth Fairy Tale Review: Cartoon Adventure with a Sprinkling of Kid-Appropriate Tween Love Story

Throughout this cartoon journey aimed at tweens, the fairy community is dedicated to gathering teeth from slumbering children and leaving treasure beneath where they sleep. Skateboarding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (brought to life by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about spending his future to gathering baby teeth—a sentiment that’s completely understandable. He’s only a bit more curious about the financial workings behind it all: the fairies deliver the teeth to mysterious goblins, who provide metal as payment. However, Van’s interest is piqued when he spots a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be far from the hideous creature he had imagined.

An Unlikely Bond and Shared Threat

The stage is set for an exciting quest with a light sprinkling of young love (though it’s very much suitable for younger kids). The goblin and fairy groups are estranged from each other, and there’s nothing like the thrill of the forbidden to unite beings together. The two species as seen here are remarkably alike, yet each holds biased views about the opposite side. The fairies are supposed to be self-centered sorts, prone to stealing anything they want, while goblins are reportedly dim-witted, foul-smelling, and backward, but are in fact bright and advanced in technology.

Naturally, this scenario needs a shared foe to join forces against, and that need is met by a group of vicious spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret about their intentions: they want to eat the goblins and fairies, and they serve as quite savage, if not particularly skilled, villains.

Ideal Viewers and Overall Impression

There aren’t all that many animated films aimed at the viewer group that is starting to experience early romances, but aren’t yet mature enough for whatever teenagers view these days in lieu of Twilight. If your child falls into this age group, this is unlikely to become their new all-time fave, but you could do worse.

The Tooth Fairy Story arrives in Scottish cinemas from 10 October and across the United Kingdom from 24 October.
