Chelsea's Boss Enzo Maresca Labels Lead-Up Time as The 'Toughest 48 Hours' with the Blues
Chelsea tactician Enzo Maresca remarked that the build-up to Saturday's triumph against Everton represented "the toughest 48 hours" he has experienced at Stamford Bridge.
The 44-year-old delivered a puzzling statement in his after-game press conference despite earning a 2-0 win at home courtesy of goals from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.
Those points sent Chelsea once again into the English top flight's top four, perhaps improving the atmosphere following a loss to Atalanta in the Champions League that had extended the side's winless run to four fixtures.
But, when questioned about Gusto's contribution and general performance, Maresca surprisingly shared his displeasure over the preceding 48-hour period within the organization.
"How the squad are eager to develop has been excellent and this is the explanation why I praise them - because with a host of challenges, they are doing very well after a complicated week," he commented.
"From the moment I arrived at the club, the past 48 hours have been the most difficult because several people didn't support us."
When pushed further on what he meant, the ex- Leicester City manager added: "Worst 48 hours since I came to the club because people failed to back me and the team."
When asked if he was referring to people internally at Chelsea, he answered: "In general. Overall," before clarifying when queried if it was aimed at supporters or the media: "I love the fans and we are extremely pleased with the fans."
Injury & Disciplinary Crisis
Maresca also highlighted Chelsea's persistent injury and suspension issues, noting they had been missing star attacker Cole Palmer for a large portion of the season, in addition to being deprived of linchpin Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and forward Liam Delap to two serious injuries.
"I truly praise the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, five of them minus Moises Caicedo, eleven of them minus Cole Palmer, almost all of them without Liam Delap," he explained.
"And this squad, regardless of who is on the pitch, they are performing exceptionally. Today was five games in 12 days so for sure when you see Cole Palmer playing, we have said many times that he's our top player but we play the vast majority of the season without our best player.
"We play five games in the Premier League minus Moises Caicedo. This is the explanation why I'm so delighted for the players and it's something that I would want people externally to acknowledge because the effort from the players is remarkable."
Chelsea's win over Everton consolidated their standing in 4th place in the Premier League table, with a Carabao Cup last-eight tie at Cardiff and a league trip to Newcastle to come in the coming days.
Uncertainty Over Maresca's Remark
It was unclear what exactly prompted Maresca to label the previous 48 hours as the most difficult of his time as Chelsea head coach.
In that timeframe, the Italian had traveled back with his staff and players from Bergamo, conducted a training session at Cobham, faced a pre-match press briefing where he appeared relaxed, and secured a victory over an in-form Everton team.
It was not obvious whether any particular press stories had unsettled him, if online comments were a factor, or if it was something more significant from within the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca only sought to deny that it was an issue involving the club's fans, some of whom have still have yet to fully warm to him since his arrival from Leicester in July 2024.
