The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
