Federal Government Ready to Dispatch Dozens Federal Agents to San Francisco
The Trump administration appeared poised on Wednesday to dispatch dozens of government officers to the San Francisco Bay Area for a significant immigration enforcement operation, prompting outrage from California leaders.
Specifics of the Deployment
Information of the deployment were continuing to unfold, but it will reportedly involve approximately 100+ federal agents, as reported. The agents are expected to begin using the military installation in across the bay, facing San Francisco. It was not confirmed whether national guard troops would participate.
Political Response
The mission comes after months of statements by Donald Trump to take action against the Democratic-run city. California’s governor Gavin Newsom denounced the move, labeling it “straight from the dictator’s handbook”.
“He deploys covered agents, he sends out Border Patrol, he deploys ICE, he creates concern and apprehension in the neighborhood so that he can claim credit for addressing that by dispatching the national guard,” he declared. “This is exactly like the arsonist putting out the fire.”
Municipal Readiness
San Francisco is the most recent metropolitan center singled out by the administration's initiative of large-scale detentions. The mission is likely to cause a standoff between the federal government and city officials who have pledged to stop paramilitary operations in the city.
San Franciscans have been preparing for weeks for Trump to fulfill frequent statements to deploy forces to the city. At a Wednesday media briefing, San Francisco’s municipal chief reiterated that the city was ready.
“Over recent weeks, we have been expecting the possibility of some kind of government operation in our city,” declared the leader, noting that he had enacted new policies on Wednesday to “enhance the city’s assistance to our immigrant communities, and ensure our departments are organized prior to any government operation.”
Judicial Framework
Regardless of legal challenges to operations in a number of cities, including Illinois, Oregon and LA, Trump has claimed “unquestioned power” to deploy the national guard in cities, referencing the federal statute which enables presidents certain rights to dispatch personnel on US soil.
Local Response
The governor, who previously served as San Francisco’s chief executive – had vowed to step in “immediately” to a mission in the city. “The concept that the White House can send forces into our cities with no legitimate cause supported by evidence, no oversight, no responsibility, disregard for local authority – it constitutes an attack on the rule of law,” he said on Wednesday.
Local organizations, including civil rights groups established during the initial federal leadership, have prepared to rapidly assemble a public demonstration in the city, as well as vigils at public spaces.
Neighborhood Impact
In San Francisco’s Mission area, a largely Hispanic neighborhood, local representative informed journalists last week she and her voters had been anticipating this situation. “The moment that workers cease employment, when anyone Black or brown can’t freely walk outside without the fear of national personnel discriminating against and arresting them, the time when students avoid classrooms, are too scared to go to the supermarket or medical provider,” she said. “Our ongoing preparations in the Mission is basically a shutdown the extent of which we have not experienced since the pandemic.”
State Troops Status
Approximately several hundred out of several thousand state national guard troops continue under national command under an command from Trump. Approximately 200 of them had been transferred to the Pacific Northwest, where they were staying in standby amid a court case over their assignment.
This period, Newsom said he had called the California national guard troops under his control to manage charity kitchens throughout the administrative stoppage.
