Monte Cook and Monte Cook Will Lead Sessions at Dungeon Master Academy
Since 2018, Tabletop Vacations has been organizing deeply engaging experiences where expert DMs manage Dungeons & Dragons games in old manors in Britain and at an American castle venue. The full-service getaways are highly favored among long-time dungeon masters who rarely get the chance to participate as players themselves, and they often ask for tips from seasoned professionals on topics ranging from improvisation and puzzle design to managing conflicts at the table.
In response, the organizers began developing a structured way to answer these inquiries, which led to the establishment of DMU. The first session is set for the start of 2026 at an Atlanta campus.
“There are numerous digital guides on virtually any subject and acquire valuable insights, but the philosophy was that nothing compares to face-to-face interaction together with fellow DMs, where direct communication with faculty instructors and your peers often in the same boat and seek to improve their skills,” stated the dean of Dungeon Master University.
Available Classes and Pricing Tiers
Game masters can opt for packages ranging from $995 to two thousand five hundred dollars, depending on the degree of interaction they desire with the instructors. The entry-level option includes a choice of four workshops:
- Foundational Skills: Focuses on the fundamentals of managing a session.
- Campaign Building: Is dedicated to building persistent adventures.
- Universe Design: Concentrates on the development of worlds.
- Industry Advancement: Designed for game masters who want to learn more about the roleplaying business.
Every class includes eight hours of instruction divided across 48 hours.
“The classes are structured so that you leave with tangible results, enhanced belief in your abilities, and numerous applicable methods,” Carl explained. “It's more than presentations and they exceed pre-recorded material. These are sessions that you can participate in, absorb insights from, and then go right back home the following week and put into practice in your local game.”
Professional Teachers
Most classes are taught by duo of instructors. Universe creation is guided by Monte Cook and the creator of Eberron, together instructing the skill of universe design.
Career building includes four different teachers, such as an author on gaming puzzles, an entertainment professional, and Hunter Fell. The extra instructors is meant to offer targeted guidance to attendees with definite objectives.
“Certain participants want to launch their own D&D actual play and share their stories with the world, several aim to release and develop fresh ideas,” Carl explained. “Others simply wish to ask, What's the path to be a DM at something like an immersive experience? What are the skills that I need? Is it for everyone?”
Advanced Options
A $1,500 enhanced option provides access to a opening gathering, a starter kit, and a half-hour consultation appointment with an instructor. This marks the debut of the program, though the company has previously run similar events during breaks between campaigns at their premium gatherings.
“It would be possible to organize an complete event just on consultation sessions for professional dungeon masters,” Carl mentioned. “I'm not certain if that’s the best use of everybody’s time – I think the coursework and the lab work is too valuable – but I believe it’s going to be among the most sought-after parts of the program.”
The $2.5K premium option includes an hour of one-on-one time and the opportunity to run a game for several participants plus a teacher, who will then give comments and guidance.
“The goal is for the faculty member to assess whatever the DM is interested in: Hey I don’t do well with improvisation or I feel stuck in this kind of combat situation. May I present a scene for you and receive input on my areas of proficiency and challenge?” Carl said. “Alternatively they want to obtain critique and advice on a specific world that they’ve been building.”
Future Plans
Responses from the inaugural session will help guide upcoming academy workshops. Carl suggested that potential adjustments could include expanding one-on-one sessions, lengthening the event to 72 hours, or testing different seminar structures.
“I hope that we do this very often,” Carl expressed. “I truly hope to see several DMU sessions in a single year, in different cities, and in different countries. The reception has been overwhelmingly favorable. We're extremely satisfied with current developments and I believe it would be fantastic to be able to do this in collaboration with large gatherings.”
