No fewer than thirteen passengers perish and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.

The official announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public works. They were executed at an rapid pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party demanded an prompt halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in complete adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
