The Actress Says Discussing Donald Trump Would ‘Add Fuel to a Fire’ Dividing the Nation Apart
Jennifer Lawrence has declared that she no longer feels appropriate to comment publicly regarding the Trump administration, concerned it could intensify divisive discussions and further divisions across the nation.
‘I Question the Usefulness’, Notes Lawrence
In a recent interview, the Oscar winner shared, “Back in Trump’s initial term, I thought I was moving hastily without clear direction. But it’s become clear, election after election, celebrities have no real impact at all on electoral choices.”
Lawrence added, “Why continue? I’m just voicing my thoughts on an issue that’s going to worsen tensions that’s ripping the country apart.”
Political Evolution
Lawrence has previously been open about supporting conservative and liberal presidential nominees over the years. Brought up by a right-leaning family in Kentucky, she supported John McCain in the 2008 election then moving to the Democratic party and explaining she recognized during the Obama era that supporting the GOP was opposing her personal freedoms as a woman.
Past Statements
Earlier in her career, she commented that Trump winning the presidency could represent “a catastrophic event” and backed Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential race. In the latest campaign, she gave her endorsement to Kamala Harris, “since I think she’s an excellent choice and I trust that she will make every effort to defend women’s health rights.”
Celebrity Views
Jennifer Lawrence was joined by most of Hollywood in her disapproval of Donald Trump as a returning figure, but the minimal impact public figures have over the voting intentions was emphasized by Trump’s victory.
“This upcoming term feels different,” noted Lawrence regarding his leadership. “Since he said what he was going to do. We understood his record for four years. He was very clear. And that’s the option selected.”
New Release
Lawrence is currently promoting Die, My Love, Lynne Ramsay’s movie in which she stars as a recent parent who faces challenges with her mental health in the countryside. Speaking at a media event for the movie in Venice, she spoke about the situation in the Middle East: “It’s frightening. It’s devastating. What’s happening is nothing short of a genocide and it’s awful.”
Broader Concerns
She continued by expressing that she was saddened by “the lack of civility in the discussions of U.S. political debates right now and how that is going to be commonplace to the younger generation right now. It’s going to be normal to them that leaders are untruthful.”
Lawrence aimed to shift anger about the issue to decision-makers rather than entertainers. “Concentrate on the people in charge,” she remarked, in what many took to be a nod to the declaration endorsed by numerous entertainment industry figures to refuse engagement with specific industry bodies.
Relatable Experiences
The actor, who earned critical acclaim aged 22 for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook, is generating Oscar buzz for her performance in the new film. Even though Ramsay has rejected the plot being understood as one of postpartum depression and mental illness, the actress shared that she connected with elements of her character’s journey after the delivery of her new baby, shortly after shooting ended.
“It was fear for my son,” she explained, “envisioning every potential danger, and then second-guessing everything that I was doing. I was already in therapy, but I got on a drug called that medicine and I continued it for a short period and it was effective.”
Film Challenges
Lawrence also mentioned of the liberating necessity of shooting revealing sequences in the film while she was expecting and limited physically.
“It feels nice,” she remarked, of being forced to abandon insecurities. “Honestly, I occasionally wonder where I’m like, What technically are the differences between my work and that profession? But it doesn’t trouble me deeply.”
