The State of Texas Attorney General Files Lawsuit Against Acetaminophen Producers Concerning Autism Spectrum Allegations

Legal Case
The Texas Attorney General, who supports former President Trump seeking election to US Senate, claimed pharmaceutical manufacturers of withholding potential dangers of acetaminophen

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is taking legal action against the producers of acetaminophen, alleging the corporations hid potential risks that the drug created to pediatric neurological development.

This legal action arrives four weeks after Former President Trump advocated an unverified association between taking acetaminophen - also known as paracetamol - during pregnancy and autism in children.

The attorney general is filing suit against Johnson & Johnson, which once produced the drug, the sole analgesic recommended for pregnant women, and Kenvue, which now manufacturers it.

In a official comment, he stated they "betrayed America by profiting off of discomfort and promoting medication without regard for the dangers."

The company states there is no credible evidence connecting Tylenol to autism spectrum disorder.

"These companies misled for generations, deliberately risking millions to line their pockets," the attorney general, from the Republican party, said.

The company said in a statement that it was "deeply concerned by the spread of false claims on the security of paracetamol and the likely effects that could have on the health of women and children in America."

On its official site, Kenvue also said it had "consistently assessed the applicable studies and there is no credible data that shows a proven link between taking acetaminophen and autism."

Associations representing medical professionals and health professionals agree.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has stated paracetamol - the key substance in acetaminophen - is a restricted selection for expectant mothers to manage discomfort and fever, which can pose major wellness concerns if ignored.

"In more than two decades of investigation on the consumption of acetaminophen in gestation, no reliable research has definitively established that the usage of acetaminophen in any stage of gestation leads to neurological conditions in offspring," the association commented.

The lawsuit mentions recent announcements from the Trump administration in claiming the medication is allegedly unsafe.

In recent weeks, Trump caused concern from health experts when he told women during pregnancy to "struggle intensely" not to consume Tylenol when unwell.

Federal regulators then released a statement that doctors should think about restricting the usage of Tylenol, while also mentioning that "a direct connection" between the drug and autism spectrum disorder in minors has not been proven.

Health Secretary Kennedy, who manages the Food and Drug Administration, had promised in April to initiate "extensive scientific investigation" that would determine the cause of autism spectrum disorder in a limited time.

But experts advised that identifying a sole reason of autism spectrum disorder - thought by researchers to be the outcome of a complex mix of genetic and surrounding conditions - would prove challenging.

Autism is a form of lifelong neurodivergence and condition that affects how people encounter and interact with the environment, and is recognized using physician assessments.

In his court filing, Paxton - who supports Trump who is running for federal office - claims Kenvue and Johnson & Johnson "deliberately disregarded and tried to quiet the evidence" around acetaminophen and autism.

This legal action attempts to require the companies "eliminate any commercial messaging" that asserts Tylenol is reliable for pregnant women.

The Texas lawsuit parallels the grievances of a assembly of guardians of children with autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who took legal action against the manufacturers of Tylenol in two years ago.

A federal judge dismissed the case, saying investigations from the family's specialists was inconclusive.
