US Attack on Venezuela Stokes Concerns of Future Greenland Acquisition.

The latest US-led strike in the South American nation and the detention of its president have renewed worry regarding America's ambitions on Greenland. Followers of the former president's base have allegedly turned their attention to the resource-rich landmass in the wake of the operations in the southern hemisphere.

Provocative Messages and Diplomatic Backlash

Only hours following the start of the Caracas operation, a prominent conservative podcaster, who is the spouse of a high-ranking White House aide, posted a symbolic image. The picture depicted Greenland covered in the American flag, accompanied by single-word message: "SOON."

This blatant suggestion to claim the resource-abundant region, which is a part of the NATO alliance, triggered swift and strong condemnation from Danish representatives.

"We are close allies and should continue to cooperate as such. US security is also the Arctic's and our security," stated the Danish ambassador to the United States. "The Kingdom of Denmark and the United States collaborate to guarantee security in the North."

The diplomat further pointed out that Denmark had substantially increased its defence spending recently, allocating a large amount expressly for Northern and North Atlantic security. "And yes, we expect full recognition for the sovereign borders of the our realm," he emphasized.

Political Appointments and Strategic Goals

The tensions were further complicated by the recent naming of a Southern governor as a special envoy to Greenland. The governor had openly expressed gratitude to the president, saying it was an "honour" to work in a volunteer capacity to "bring Greenland into the US."

After the military action in Venezuela, this representative commended the president's actions, connecting it to the broader "fight against narcotics."

Since returning to office, the American leader has repeatedly unnerved transatlantic partners with his expressed interest in Greenland. The territory is viewed as critically important for national security and future mineral exploitation. It already houses the northernmost US air base.

Refusing to Rule Out Military Action

In a significant television interview, the president declined to rule out the use of military force to acquire Greenland. This stance comes amid growing great-power competition in the Arctic. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he remarked.

He described Greenland as having a "tiny amount of people, which we’ll look after, and we’ll cherish them... But we need that for global security."

Mounting Tensions and Indigenous Opposition

In reaction to this constant "rhetoric" of intent, Danish security agency took the unprecedented step last month of classifying the United States as a "security risk."

The leaders of Denmark and Greenland delivered a joint and stern statement: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You must not annex other countries."

Surveys in Greenland reveals a nuanced sentiment. While a vast majority of the territory's residents seek self-rule from Copenhagen, there is simultaneously scant appetite to join the United States. The territory has had the option to seek sovereignty for many years.

Expert View: A Credible Scenario?

Some analysts are increasingly re-evaluating the possibility of such a move. One thinktank analyst specializing in military analysis conceded she had once discounted the rhetoric but was "currently not so sure."

"It wouldn't be that hard for the US to station a few hundred or a few thousand troops on Greenland, and it's not clear to me which power could intervene about it," she concluded.
