Democracy thrives when Black Americans advance. The evidence is clear: citizenship by birth, legal due process, equal opportunity legislation across education, housing, and employment sectors and fair business funding all stem from the systemic corrections currently called DEI. However, recently, DEI has been used as a smokescreen by calculating policymakers and campaigners to reverse advancements and consolidate power.

Measurable Consequences of These Current Tactics

The impact of these tactics is concrete and undeniable. Since the start of this year, research has found showing 306,000 African American women have become unemployed and $3.4 billion in funding initiatives investing in African American neighborhoods has been slashed – including $9.4m for sickle cell studies, $42 million in programs designed to address maternal death rates in Black communities plus $31m in cuts to address asthma rates and air pollution harming Black children.

Historical Perspective and Broader Implications

Concerted attempts to stifle the progress of Black communities is not new; nevertheless, history has proven that when advancements for African Americans are removed, all communities face negative consequences. In the Reconstruction era, Black Americans made extraordinary strides – holding office, building businesses and founding schools. Rarely mentioned is the way other oppressed communities, including poor white farmers to Latino gauchos, also benefited from expanded opportunities within legal and financial frameworks.

Distortion is among the most deceptive strategies. It reshapes reality in ways that limit our possibilities and cements bigotry through legislation.

As African Americans faced decades of segregation laws and state-sanctioned discrimination, other communities saw a similar retreat on their access to full citizenship. As the equality movement sought to eliminate the remnants of segregation, its methods of peaceful protest expanded freedom and opportunity not just for African Americans, but for communities of all backgrounds. Including Indigenous rights activism to the advancement of LGBTQ+ rights to women's economic empowerment, Black civil rights opened the aperture for greater civil liberties.

Current Challenges with Intentional Efforts

However, every time African American neighborhoods make progress, forces threatened by change attempt to reverse advancements. While confronting present leadership, DEI is the bulwark that guarantees a pluralistic democracy. Its strength is rooted not in politics, but in the promise of the nation's foundation: that every individual possess equal worth and deserve a chance to thrive.

We must understand these attacks as components of a deliberate campaign. The goal is to alter our nation's story and restrict the prospects of Black Americans, and consequently, every citizen considered inferior. We can be tempted to view their actions separately, but this is intentional.

Academic and Financial Impacts

Scholarships and education programs are being cut, causing African American scholars with reduced opportunities to pursue a quality education. These cuts also affect Native American students and served as a predicate for assaults against Latino scholars. African American households still reside in areas having poorly funded education due to historical patterns of separation and disparity, and the resulting impact of slashing services unequally affects all low-income children and disabled people.

Funding for Black-owned businesses and vital health initiatives have been slashed, leaving our nation lacking the information necessary to address systemic disparities in our economy and medical infrastructure. The follow-on effect will undermine research and investment for females of all ethnic backgrounds. Through altering who matters, who is valued and what histories are taught, these policies compound the barriers that communities have struggled for generations to conquer.

Elimination and Censorship Working Together

Erasure and suppression operate together, and those implementing them predictably start with the African American community. Those seeking to cripple democracy have eliminated African American narratives from educational materials, exhibits and public memory, costing us the lessons about resistance, correction and redemption. Growing authoritarian regimes know to pressure educational institutions, universities, businesses and government institutions toward quiet compliance.

Moving Ahead and Shared Duty

The challenge currently facing us is: how will we respond in response? Should we permit fear, disinformation and autocracy to write the next chapter? Or will we act, fiercely and deliberately, to protect reality, respect African American advancements and protect the right to opportunity for every American? The answer will influence not just this moment, but also the destiny of the nation.

Protecting and defending the significant advancements we've made represents an ethical necessity, one that demands concerted civil action. As the struggle for freedom has taught us, when we fight for liberty, we succeed. We certainly confront coordinated attacks on truth, designed to create hopelessness or lead to inaction – but we must prevent this.

The country's tomorrow won't come automatically. Its success or failure will depend on our decisions to do and resist now.

The national narrative started with the principle that from many, unity could emerge. E pluribus unum represents the core of diversity, equity and inclusion, the actual experience of the Black experience and the proof that we can build something bigger beyond anxiety and hopelessness. Together, we can maintain access, honor truth and reinforce democratic systems for generations to come.
